Recommended actions to take
- Link the organisation’s serious mental illness (SMI) strategy to existing quality, safety and governance structures, including serious untoward incident (SUI) management and quality initiatives such as safe staffing, the productive ward and Trust quality improvement programmes.
- In line with national Improving physical healthcare to reduce premature mortality in people with serious mental illness (PSMI) Commissioning for Quality and Innovation (CQUIN), Care Quality Commission and related National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance, deliver the Standards for Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) Services.
- Work with primary care to align and streamline efforts to ensure all those living with SMI have – at a minimum – a comprehensive annual health check (in line with the Five Year Forward View for Mental Health (FYFVMH) target and the national guidance for CCGs.
- Implement standard screening tools (e.g. Bradford Template) to embed CQUIN requirements in sustainable systems and routine clinical practice.
