Summary care record

Healthy London Partnership and NHS England have formed a team to deliver training to over 1400 London Community Pharmacies. Our aim is to ensure at least 95% of pharmacies have the ability to access Summary Care Records (SCR) by April 2017. Another key objective for the team is to drive utilisation of SCR so that pharmacies and patients realise the benefits of SCR access.

In June 2015, it was announced that the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) now NHS Digital had been commissioned by NHS England to lead on the implementation of Summary Care Record (SCR) in community pharmacies.

This page contains useful documents and guidance that will help you implement Summary Care Records in your pharmacy

Training

In order for pharmacists to be able to access SCR they will have completed online and face to face training. As of mid-October 2016 ,93% of London community pharmacies had completed training as a result of attending one of 43 pan London events.

If your pharmacy has not done so, you will not be able to access your patients’ summary care records. To discuss the requirements needed to be ready to access SCRs please contact the London SCR Team on england.londonscr@nhs.net

Benefits of using Summary Care Record in pharmacy – proof of concept

A proof of concept (POC) study took place in 2015 where 140 pharmacists trialed SCR access. An end of project audit highlighted that greater utilisation of SCR in community pharmacies directly delivered numerous benefits to GPs, practice staff and patients by supporting the following:

  • 85% of Pharmacists saved time on calls to GPs
  • 92% of patients needed no further signposting to GPs, A&E, 111 and OOH services
  • 85% of Pharmacists saw improved patient safety
  • 18% of cases avoided a prescribing error
  • 82% of cases reduced waiting times

Utilisation

In order to deliver maximum value, usage of SCR is essential. Many pharmacists across England access SCRs as part of their daily routine. Click on the below case studies to see some examples
