Transforming Cancer Services Team Cancer Waits Improvement

The TCST Cancer Waits Improvement programme is a partnership with the NHS England Elective Care Improvement Support Team (IST).

We work to agreed objectives that aim to improve secondary care cancer pathways and, in turn, improve outcomes for patients. We use Elective Care IST approaches and national tools and improvement methods to undertake baseline assessments, analysis and interpretation of relevant data.

Improving cancer wait times aligns to the delivery of national and regional priorities and standards including the NHS Long-Term Plan, optimal timed pathways and faster diagnosis along with regional strategies for cancer across London.

The delivery of improvement objectives across cancer pathways including diagnostics, supporting providers and systems with key outputs to enable accurate forecasting and both short-term and long-term improvement plans. This is mainly achieved by using the following approaches.

  • Demand and capacity modelling
  • Pathway analysis
  • MDT Co-ordinator Workforce modelling
  • Comprehensive analysis and outputs
  • Post modelling implementation support
  • Relationship building and collaborative working
  • Training

The cancer waits improvement programme works collaboratively with clinical, operational, and business intelligence leads from NHS trusts across London, linking in with colleagues from cancer alliances. Stakeholders also include; Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) and STP/ICSs across London and national/regional cancer programme teams within NHS England.
