A framework for investing in primary care clinical leadership
General Practice is about to embark on period of significant change underpinned by the NHS Long Term Plan and the new GP Contract. Clinical leadership is the cornerstone of the four building blocks of organisational development in Primary Care and is a fundamental response to the plan, as well as vision set out in The Next Steps to the Strategic Clinical Framework for London
In light of the need to ensure that clinical leadership is central to primary care transformation agenda, this document aims to help STPs, commissioners and providers to:
- Understand the positive impact of investing in clinical leadership and the importance of identifying clinical leaders, for example – Clinical Directors for every Primary Care Network
- Adopt a systems based leadership approach to help STPs as they move towards integrated care partnerships and to establish fit-for-purpose and sustainable primary care networks
- Create a substantial and sustainable link for local systems with National planning through effective leadership to deliver place-based integrated health care.
- Understand how to approach the investment for clinical leadership and what needs to be considered in a more consistent and systematic manner.
